Electrical Cooperatives: The Power to Be
It was a gloomy day in the middle of June. There were three very different birds sitting up on an electrical wire. One bird was a cardinal named Ray. He was very different from the other birds; he was caring and kindhearted. The next bird was a blue jay named Tiki. He was very bashful. The last bird sitting on the wire was a mockingbird named Anna. She was a very loud bird and loved to sing to attract male mockingbirds to her. They were all best friends and loved sitting on the electrical wire together.
They were sitting there when they noticed the sky started getting really dark. Anna said in fright, “I think a storm is coming” to the other birds. The birds got scared and flew into a nearby rustic barn to take shelter. As they flew into the barn, they saw a bolt of sharp lightning hit the electrical wire they were just sitting on.
Tiki said, “Phew, we made it inside just in time.” They figured the storm would just pass by, but it didn’t. It turned into hours and hours of sitting in the barn, waiting for it to pass. The lightning that hit the wire ended up knocking all the power out in the neighborhood. All three birds were in shock and didn’t know what to do.
It wasn’t long before technicians from the locally owned co-op showed up. They went straight to work to get the power back on as quickly as possible for the neighborhood. Before they knew it, the power was restored. Ray said, “Man, that was fast!”
“Yes it was!” exclaimed the other birds. Now that the power was back on, they flew back to the wire and continued to sit on it. While they were sitting there, they started a conversation about the co-op and how wonderful it is.
Tiki started the conversation by saying, “Did you know that co-ops are voluntary organizations open to all persons?”
Anna added, “Co-ops also provide education and training for their members. They provide programs about electrical safety and the many uses of electricity. The programs are available for people of all ages.”
Tiki said to Ray, “Well aren’t you a member of the co-op?”
“No,” said Ray.
“Well, it’s totally free to join and it helps the community, too,” said Tiki.
Ray said in excitement, “I want to join right away so I can get all the benefits members get, and I love helping out the community!” With all three birds being members of the co-op, they can help their community together even more!
The next day came and the co-op came back out and started putting new wires up. The birds flew over to see what the co-op was doing. Tiki exclaimed, “I think we are getting a new wire to sit on!”
“That would be great!” exclaimed the other birds. They couldn’t wait until the new wires were installed. A month passed by, and all the new wires were up. The birds flew over to one of the new wires and sat down.
Ray said, “This wire seems different to me. Do you know what it’s for?”
Tiki replied, “The new wires are to expand the availability of broadband internet to the community. The broadband internet is called fiber and it will help the whole community and make life easier for everyone.”
The birds were delighted to find out about the new technology. Even though it wouldn’t help them, they knew it would help their lovely community.
Tiki said, “The local co-op has helped the community in so many ways including broadband internet, the availability of reliable energy, and leadership development for young people. By giving the community reliable energy, the community can be healthier and a better place to live in. Co-ops also give leadership development for young people, so the community is in control all the time.”
All the birds said together, “We should do something to help them since they help us so much!”
“But what should we do?” asked Anna. They thought about it for a while and finally got an idea. They would help the co-op by singing a peaceful song the next time they come out to fix something. Anna thought that singing the song was a wonderful idea considering that mockingbirds love to sing. They waited and waited for the co-op to come back out. Finally, they did two weeks later. As soon as the birds saw them, they started singing the most peaceful song they knew to thank them.
The day was over and the birds were just up sitting on the wire watching the sun go down. Anna said, “Today was a wonderful day. The neighborhood now has fast broadband internet, and new electricity thanks to the co-op.” The birds said all together, “And the best part is that we have a new wire to sit on!” The birds were happy that the co-op helped the community so much, and now the community would be better than ever!
My college essay
My English 1 and 2 experience was probably some of the best experiences I have ever had. My teacher, Mrs. Leasure, was definitely a very big impact on it. She pushed me to help me succeed, and was the one that helped me get the love of writing. She helped me realize that I could do it and made me grow more confidence in myself. I could never thank her enough for everything.
In middle school, I was awful at anything English related. English 1 definitely wasn’t my strongest, but I got so much help and feedback from her that English 2 was much easier for me. Each writing assignment I did in her class had so much feedback on it that helped me improve so much. One of my strongest pieces of writing that I have done is probably my memoir that we wrote towards the end of English 2. I was able to put so much passion and emotion into it.
It has also helped me succeed in harder english classes and even win the MTEMC electric short story contest my junior year. Winning the short story contest was one of the best achievements I could’ve ever asked for. Not only did it give me scholarship money for college; it made me realize how good I am at writing. I was never fully confident in any of my writing, but now it’s nothing for me to write a perfect essay.
After those classes, I went on to get my first job at my town’s local newspaper, and I’m also the editor-in-chief for my high school’s newspaper.
I’m so thankful that I was able to get those experiences that truly changed my life. I found such a passion for English and writing; that now I’m confident enough to major in English and have a career in writing. It helped me determine who I was as a person, and what I would do for the rest of my life. I would’ve turned out so different if it wasn’t for those life changing classes. I’m hoping that my years in college will be great experiences just like these.
